Karwa Chauth has always been a fancy festival in North India, all thanks to Yash Raj Films. It’s considered nothing less than the Indian version of Valentine’s Day. Though it’s a stringent fasting festival for married women, also observed by men; there has been quite a long trend of unmarried girls celebrating it for their dream husband.
Well, very few unmarried girls know that the rituals they should be following are different than that of a married woman. First of all, it has to be understood that this festival is for married women only. Unmarried women started observing fasts after the influence of Bollywood movies so as per shashtra, there’s barely any mention of an unmarried woman.
For those who are bride-to-be or aspire to be one, the most important aspect is that they shouldn’t observe stringent fast like married women but should consume fruit and water throughout the day. There’s no concept of nirjala vrat for them.
They may keep up with the rest of the rituals and worship Shiva and Parvati for a partner of their choice. Since they keep consuming water already, there’s no need for a partner to offer them jal for drinking. They too may feast on sumptuous dinner after offering arghya to the moon.
Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day of the full moon. This one-day festival is celebrated in parts of North India including Himachal, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
