New Delhi: Muslims all over the world observe the fast during the holy month of Ramadan, which falls in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and generally falls in March or April as per the Gregorian calendar. It comes to an end with the festival called Eid ul-Fitr.
Eid-ul-Fitr’s date varies from year to year because it is based on the sighting of the new moon, but it usually falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated between April 21 to April 23 this year, as it depends on the moon’s sighting.
Eid-ul-Fitr is also known as Meethi Eid because, on this day, worshippers break their fast and begin the new month of Shawaal on a sweet note. As a result, cooking sweet delicacies like Sheer Khurma and Kimami Sevaiyan is an important element of this festival. On this day, people gather to break their fasts and feast. They also dress in new clothes, pray, and give to the destitute. Elders also offer money as gifts to children, which is known as ‘Eidi’.
