DJ Greff is Yugesh Madhwani’s stage name. And under this moniker the 29-year-old has caused quite a stir. In the past few years, DJ Greff has conquered the EDM and Dance scene of the country, and has appeared in countless music festivals and concerts. His sets in festivals like Sunburn, and EVC; and his opening act for David Guetta, Martin Garrix, and DJ Snake were a huge win for indie artists.
He has been in the industry since 2013, and in the past decade he has explored multitudes of genres and experimented endlessly. His sonical explorations are apparent in his singles – “Don’t Know Shit”, “Shaam” and “Black Butter”. Don’t Know Shit was a summer hit and has 2.9 Million streams to its name.
Apart from commercial success, Madhwani has accrued many accolades over the years and continues to set higher benchmarks with his work.
Considering his musical acumen, we find him to be a perfect candidate for our questions about arts and music. We reached out to him to get a mini masterclass on music production- and like a true artist he happily shared his secret!
The secret? It’s within you.
DJ Greff explains, “The reason why art stands the test of time is its irreplaceable-ity. Every artist, every maker comes from his own mindset, and experience and produces something that is entirely his. And to make art that can hold its own, you have to tap into yourself to get an unmatched, unique “product”. Your vision should be borne out of you, without outside hindrances – don’t think about popular opinions, don’t think about trends or anything. Just make whatever you set your mind to fearlessly.”.
DJ Greff has stuck to this philosophy his entire career and looking at his trajectory, it sure does hold weight. With this philosophy in place, DJ Greff moves to the studio to produce music. He says, “I see these soundscapes before I visualise the sound. I draw inspiration from various genres, and I am always ready to tap into new ideas. What if we experiment with this time signature? What if we bring this instrument into this mix? And so on. I fill in the puzzle pieces of soundscape and build the track to be fun and authentic.”.
He emphasises on the importance of having good collaborators and being open-minded and urges everyone to break barriers unapologetically when it comes to art.
