  • Turmeric, whose main component is curcumin, has anti-inflammatory qualities that reduce morning stiffness and aids in better walking. As an Indian, it is part of their daily diet; however, it can also be consumed by adding a pinch of it in milk and taking it directly.
  • Garlic, a very common part of the diet of everyone everywhere around the world, is also another recommended herb. Its components help the prostaglandins to control inflammation and related pain.
  • Fenugreek seeds are another good remedy. A teaspoon of it can be soaked overnight and consumed in the morning. It reduces inflammation, stiffness and joint pains. The water is good for diabetics.
  • Triphala, a herbal formula, is effective for arthritis. A teaspoon of it with warm water at bed time is not only known to be beneficial for pain, but it also boosts overall health.

Diet and Lifestyle Modifications

The diet should include plenty of citrus as Vitamin C is vital for such people. It is essential in minimising the pain that one suffers in such conditions. Thus, fruits like orange, amla (Indian gooseberry) and all fruits loaded with Vitamin C are recommended.

Panchakarma Therapies

Here is a list of panchakarma therapies that work for arthritis:

  • Virechan where the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder and liver are removed of toxins with frequent bowel movement. Then is the period of fasting followed by a light diet. T helps with gout, arthritis and many other ailments.
  • Abhyangam is self-massage with medicated oils. It lubricates the joints and tones muscles supporting the joints. The massage should be done for 40-45 minutes with strokes and pressure in a synchronized motion. This helps in arthritis, paralysis, spondylosis, insomnia and boosts immunity.
  • Basti is the cleansing action of the colon where an oil enema or concoction is induced in the rectum. It treats arthritis, gout, rheumatism, headaches, muscle spasms, and numerous other diseases.
  • Upanaham is for joint pain in arthritis. A warm medicated herbal paste is applied on the affected areas and bandaged with a piece of cotton cloth for a few hours. It promotes circulation and strengthens the muscles to relieve joint pain and swelling.

Yoga and Meditation

According to ayurveda, exhaustive and high-pressure exercises are not at all recommended. They need to do exercises that are not taxing and grueling on the joints and bones. Even simple exercises and yoga can be done to tide over that period. Depending on the ability of the person, the exercises and yoga should be specified and regulated.   • Heat and cold applications – Ice can be applied to the affected area as soon as the injury takes place and can continue for a few days after that. It relieves the pain and swelling and enhances blood circulation. It also helps to drain excess fluid. However, if there are muscle spasms and stiffness, ice should not be used. Heat is suggested to relieve the pain and improve blood circulation. However, even that should not be done if there is inflammation or swelling.
  • Exercising – It is another good way to relieve pain. Stretching exercises are beneficial but after consultation with an expert.
  • Proper diet – Healthy meals at regular times are recommended by ayurveda. Herbs like ginger, cinnamon and pepper should be included in the diet. Omega-rich foods like mackerel, tuna, sardines for fish lovers and chia & flax seeds for non-fish eaters.
  • Medications – Herbs like ashwagandha, bala, rasna, dashmula and guggulu are helpful.
