Giving birth to a child has never been anything less than a mission with an army of doctors, nutritionists, caretakers and family involved during the entire process of nine months. While suggestions keep pouring from all corners to get a healthy baby and a safe delivery, a few beliefs in the Chinese tradition are too bizarre to be believed and fall kilometers away when it comes to logic.
Nutritional guidance for pregnant women
In India, one might have heard of eating almonds and oranges to have a beautiful child, the reason behind this is the richness of vitamins E and C respectively in these eatables that enhance our skin. However, as per the ancient literature of China, Taichan Shu, the book on the generation of foetus, the embryo receives water only as the second trimester begins. In this phase, the pregnant woman should consume wheat, rice and eels. Their nutrients help in blood formation and are good for the eyes.
Dog’s skull for beautiful baby
As per another superstitious belief, eating the skull of a white dog would result in a beautiful child and will help in its development. The skull should be boiled and eaten to get the ‘appropriate’ results. On the contrary, eating a lamb’s flesh should be avoided as it may lead to the child suffering from epilepsy after birth.
Chinese beliefs on pregnancy
Another myth which had been in practice in China says that pregnant women should take rice in a small bowl when having their evening meal. The small bowl will result in a baby with a small head. How can a bowl size decide the head size of a child?

In ancient days, when midwives used to help pregnant women in giving birth, they were supposed to go straight to the kitchen before heading to the labour room when they were instructed to touch the knife. The Chinese belief behind this act says that touching the knife would demolish all the ill wills and negative energies that might have come along with the lady.
