Thyroid disease is currently one of the most common health conditions in the world and affects around 40 million people in India. There are also two main types of thyroid disease- hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Hashimoto’s disease, which comes under underactive thyroid, has also become common in India and reportedly affects 11 per cent of the population.
It is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the individual’s thyroid gland. This condition causes fatigue, weight gain, and constipation. Several celebrities have opened up about their diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease and raised awareness.
Arjun Kapoor
Arjun Kapoor, who went through an impressive physical transformation before his acting debut, revealed being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease at 30. The actor also revealed that his late mother, Mona Kapoor, and his sister, Anshula, were also diagnosed with this condition.

Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson, who is a popular singer and talk show host, talked about being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism in 2018. While speaking to actress Mayim Bialik in 2021, she said, “Any needle that goes in my body is either taking blood to check my thyroid, cause it’s off…my thyroid is crap… I’m working on it!”
She further added, “I was with a trainer, and they said, ‘Why can you not lose weight? You work out all the time.” I was like, ‘I don’t know. I’m not sneaking food.’ We found out that it was very underactive. I’d never heard much about it. I was like 25, and I made a joke, ‘This is just that fat people thing….people get fat and say, oh, it must be my thyroid.’ I thought it was just people BSing. And then I found out it’s real. That’s karma. That’s ironic.”

Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid, who is a supermodel and is well-known for being fit, revealed her diagnosis in 2014. She also talked about being trolled and body-shamed due to her weight fluctuation. The model added, “For those of you so determined to come up [with] why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started (at) 17, I was not yet diagnosed (with) Hashimoto’s disease.”

Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey talked about her diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease in 2007 and took a break to focus on her health. In her article ‘Giving Myself A Month Off’, she shared, “My body was turning on me. First hyperthyroidism, which sped up my metabolism and left me unable to sleep for days. (Most people lose weight. I didn’t.) Then hypothyroidism, which slowed down my metabolism and made me want to sleep all the time. (Most people gain weight. I did! Twenty pounds!)”
