Arthritis, a common bone-related disease, is increasingly affecting people across all age groups, with women being more prone to the condition than men. Characterised by swelling and pain in the joints, arthritis—also known as osteoarthritis—can be triggered by various causes, including wear and tear of bones due to lack of lubrication, injuries, or low immunity.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 80% of people with arthritis experience difficulty in walking. Alarmingly, 25% of them struggle with everyday tasks. Although the risk of arthritis increases significantly after the age of 65, experts have observed a rise in cases among younger populations as well.
Data reveals a gender disparity in the prevalence of the disease, with 9.6% of men affected compared to over 18% of women.
To tackle arthritis and its symptoms, several herbal treatments are being explored. Medicines such as Punarnavadi Mandoor are known to help reduce swelling and boost physical strength. Mukta Shukti Bhasma aids in controlling constipation, improving immunity, and regulating blood sugar levels. Mahout Vidhansabha is said to relieve nerve pain and is also considered effective in cases of epileptic seizures. Amavatari Rasa helps in reducing gout and joint pain, while Pure Guggulu has shown effectiveness in healing joint pain and wounds.
Dr. Anurag Varshney, associated with the development of a new medicine, stated that while allopathy provides pain relief, it does not improve the disease itself. In contrast, patients who regularly used the alternative medicine, Patanjali Peedanil, reported reduced symptoms over time.
In addition, the Patanjali Research Institute has introduced Pedanil Spray, made with ingredients such as ajwain, gandhpura, pudina, nilgiri oil, and bhimseni camphor. The spray is reported to provide immediate relief and is especially useful for sports injuries and related joint pain.
With arthritis cases on the rise, particularly among women, health experts emphasise the importance of increasing physical activity and considering herbal treatments alongside conventional methods for better management of the disease.
