Pune’s Ganeshotsav Finds A Modern Torchbearer In Punit Balan

Balan’s association with the Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal, regarded as the first public Ganesh mandal of undivided India (established in 1892), has given his role even greater cultural weight.

As Maharashtra’s cultural capital gears up for its grandest celebration—Ganeshotsav—one personality who has come to the forefront in recent years is entrepreneur and social contributor Punit Balan. From vibrant banners across pandals to initiatives run through his group and foundation, his presence has steadily grown, making him one of the most recognized faces of the city’s festivities.

Many Ganesh mandals acknowledge that Balan’s participation has provided vital support at a time when festival expenses—from decorations to stage programs—have climbed sharply. For smaller mandals, especially, structured sponsorships have been a lifeline, allowing them to showcase traditional pageantry without financial obstacles. “His contribution lets us focus on the devotional and cultural dimensions of the festival,” said one organiser from central Pune.

Balan’s association with the Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal, regarded as the first public Ganesh mandal of undivided India (established in 1892), has given his role even greater cultural weight. The mandal, which set the foundation for the sarvajanik Ganeshotsav movement later popularized by Lokmanya Tilak during the freedom struggle, remains a historic institution. As Trustee and Festival Head of this mandal, Balan has encouraged initiatives that echo the values of its founder—discipline, devotion, and community upliftment—while still making space for contemporary practices.

His role became particularly visible during the COVID-19 years, when lockdowns and restrictions muted celebrations. While processions and performances were curtailed, Balan’s sponsorships and digital efforts helped maintain the spiritual connect with devotees across the city.

Coming from a real estate family, Balan has diversified into construction, aviation, IT, cinema, and sports. Despite his business footprint, he is vocal about dedicating a large share of resources to philanthropy through the Indrani Balan Foundation, which funds schools, orphanages, and welfare programs across India—including educational initiatives in Kashmir.

For him, Ganeshotsav is both a devotional and social cause. “The festival should unite people and inspire us to contribute back to society,” he remarked during an interaction. Apart from financing mandals, Balan has also sought to restore traditional flavor to celebrations. His push for DJ-free Ganeshotsav and Dahi Handi events has been welcomed by cultural activists who see it as a step toward reducing noise levels and reviving devotional ambiance. Instead of blaring speakers, he promotes traditional rhythms of dhol-tasha and lezim, adding both vibrancy and authenticity to the atmosphere.

Beyond festivals, his involvement in sports development has also stood out. By investing in teams across kho-kho, table tennis, cricket, and more, he has created platforms for young athletes to shine nationally and internationally. Parallelly, his backing of cultural and youth-centric programs reflects his effort to keep the younger generation rooted in tradition while equipping them for modern opportunities.

While some critics question the commercial side of such visible sponsorship, others argue that Ganeshotsav has always evolved with time. Observers note that Lokmanya Tilak himself had envisioned the festival as a dynamic public movement, adapting to social needs of each era. In that light, Punit Balan’s approach represents a blend of heritage with contemporary outreach.

As this year’s celebrations unfold, his imprint is evident across Pune. For organisers and devotees alike, his role symbolizes the festival’s evolving identity—where spirituality, culture, social responsibility, and youth engagement converge under the banner of Ganeshotsav.
