The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has marked its entry into India’s aviation sector with its inaugural arrival and departure operations on Thursday. Notably, this took place as a culmination of efforts toward commencing passenger operations at this highly awaited airport situated in Ulwe, Raigad district.
The first aircraft to land was IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, which arrived at NMIA at 8:00 am and was welcomed with a water cannon salute in a tradition as old as flight itself to celebrate special occasions like this one. Soon after, NMIA hosted its first departing flight as IndiGo flight 6E882 departed for Hyderabad at 8:40 am.
The beginning of scheduled passenger services at NMIA is being viewed as an important development in the context of the development of the civil aviation sector in India. The new airport will be greatly instrumental in developing connectivity in the region and will prove to be an important development in the region’s economic development in the coming years.
