Linked your Aadhaar and PAN card? If not, do it right away, as if these essential steps are not completed by the last day of the year, your PAN may get deactivated, rendering it useless and leading to several challenges.
According to a notification issued by the Income Tax Department in April this year, those who were issued a PAN card using their Aadhaar number before October 1, 2024, are required to link their PAN and Aadhaar by the end of 2025. The deadline is December 31 and is unlikely to be extended.
If someone fails to complete this task by the deadline for linking Aadhaar with PAN, their PAN may be deactivated starting January 1, 2026—the first day of the year, as per an Aaj Tak report. Therefore, it is strongly advised that you complete this important task as soon as possible. Linking PAN and Aadhaar is mandatory under tax laws.
What you might face if your PAN gets deactivated
If cardholders fail to complete the task within the stipulated deadline, they could face a slew of problems. These may include difficulties in filing taxes, receiving refunds, or carrying out other financial transactions. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also issued instructions to those who obtained their PAN using their Aadhaar enrolment ID instead of the actual Aadhaar number to complete the PAN–Aadhaar linking process by this deadline.
How you can link PAN and Aadhaar
- Log in to the official website of the Income Tax Department: www.incometax.gov.in.
- Once the page opens, go to the Quick Links section and click on Link Aadhaar.
- A new window will open where you need to enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number.
- Select the option “I validate my Aadhaar details.”
- You will then receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP in the required field and click on Validate.
After completing this process, your PAN will be successfully linked to your Aadhaar card.
