As we near the end of 2024, and retrospect all the good events of the year, one can’t ignore few heartbreaking events also. The devastating railway accidents which claimed several lives, highlight the weaknesses in our transport systems and the need for stronger safety measures. These incident serve as reminder and calls for change and accountability in the rail sector.

Jamtara Train Accident (February 28, 2024)
At least two passengers died and some were injured after being hit by a train near Kaljariya railway crossing in Jharkhand’s Jamtara-Karmatand area on February 28. The incident occurred at Kalajharia railway station in Jamtara.
“Near the Kalajharia railway crossing, the train stopped, and some passengers got off and were run over by another local train. Information was received that some people had died. RPF and the district police are conducting a search operation, and two bodies have been recovered so far,” the SDO said.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed their condolences.
Palghar Goods Carrier Derailment (March 29, 2024)
Six wagons of a goods train derailed at Palghar yard in Maharashtra March 29. The derailment caused disruption of traffic for Mumbai-bound trains coming from Gujarat as well as the local rail network here.
At least, 53 trains were cancelled completely while 28 trains faced partial cancellation.
Sirhind Freight Train Accident (June 2, 2024)
Two loco pilots were injured when a stationary goods train was hit from behind by another at the Sirhind railway station in Fatehgarh Sahib. The incident occurred on June 2 around 3:15 am between the Sirhind junction and Sadhoogarh railway station in Punjab. Eight coaches of a goods carrier collided with a freight train near Sirhind. 59 trains were affected and 51 of them had to be diverted due to the derailment.
Kanchanjunga Express Accident (June 17, 2024)
At least eight people were killed 25 -30 injured after a goods train collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express on June 17. The accident occurred at Ruidhasa near Rangapani station in the Katihar Railway Division ahead of New Jalpaiguri Junction at around 8:45 am. This accident sparked political controversy with opposition questioning Union Railways Minister for just making reels
Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Train Derailment (July 18, 2024)
Dibrugarh Express derailed near Jhilahi Railway Station in Gonda, where four people were killed and at least 31 sustained injuries. The incident took place between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway station under the jurisdiction of North Eastern Railway at about 2:37 pm on July 18. As many as 4-5 coaches of the train from the front had derailed.
Mysuru-Darbhanga Express Accident (October 11, 2024)
The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed after ramming into a stationary goods train in Kavaraipettai. 12 coaches of Mysuru-Darbhanga Express train derailed in Tiruvallur district. The passenger train had collided with a goods train. There were around 1,360 passengers on board.
Maligaon Train Derailment (October 31, 2024)
A wagon of goods train carrying food grains derailed near MUPA in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section in Assam’s Maligaon. The incident took place at 4:00 pm inside tunnel number 2 at KM /52/5 on October 31.
Telangana Train Accident (November 13, 2024)
Eleven wagons of the goods train carrying iron ore derailed between Raghavapuram and Ramagundam on November 13. South Central Railway (SCR) said that nearly 37 passenger trains were cancelled, and more than 10 other trains were affected.
