Panaji: A man from Gujarat has been arrested for allegedly raping a women tourist at a resort in Assonora village of North Goa, said police said on Friday.
As per a statement by a senior Police official, an unsettling incident occurred on August 23rd, wherein an individual identified as Laxman Shiyar, aged 47, was arrested based on a complaint filed by a woman. The accused, who was visiting Goa as a tourist, was taken into custody by the police following the complaint.
“The narrative unfolds with the woman and the accused encountering each other during a flight, subsequently developing a friendly connection. During their interactions, the man managed to obtain the woman’s phone number, leading to continued communication over the phone. This interaction culminated in a visit to Goa, undertaken separately by both parties earlier this week,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi said.
“On August 23rd, the accused contacted the woman and urged her to visit the resort in Assonora where he was residing. This invitation was presented under the pretext of showcasing the facilities available at the resort. Unfortunately, once the woman arrived at the resort, the accused lured her into his room and committed an act of rape. Additionally, he employed threats to deter the woman from revealing the incident to anyone else,” he stated.
Responding to the woman’s complaint, law enforcement established dedicated teams to address the issue. The accused was subsequently apprehended in Thivim village, situated near Mapusa town in North Goa.
While the authorities did not disclose the age of the victim, it is evident that the incident has brought to light concerning instances of exploitation and abuse. The incident occurred in Assonora village, which is approximately 40 km away from the capital city, Panaji.
