Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election 2024: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah has expressed openness to forming a government in Jammu and Kashmir with the support of Mehbooba Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if needed. The NC-Congress alliance may seek PDP’s backing to tackle key issues such as unemployment and press freedom in the region.
Common Goals: Addressing Key Issues
Abdullah emphasized that the alliance’s focus would be on improving the conditions of the state’s people, reducing unemployment, and restoring press freedom. He believes that despite being political rivals, cooperation could benefit the people. “If we work towards the same goals, I have no objections to taking support,” Abdullah stated.
Omar Abdullah Dismisses Speculation
Omar Abdullah, a senior NC leader, downplayed reports of potential PDP support, calling them “premature speculations.” He clarified that no offers had been made and urged everyone to wait for the election results before making assumptions.

PDP’s Stand on Alliance
PDP leader Iltija Mufti also dismissed the rumors, stating that her party’s senior leadership would only decide on supporting a secular front after the results are out. She reiterated that the speculations were “unnecessary” at this point.
Focus on Full Statehood
Farooq Abdullah ruled himself out as a contender for the chief minister’s post, focusing instead on building a strong government. He stressed the need for the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and emphasized that only a fully empowered government could resolve the region’s issues.
Independent Support and BJP Opposition
Abdullah indicated that the NC would welcome support from independents but clarified that his party wouldn’t actively seek it. He also warned that NC would oppose any attempts by the BJP to empower the Lieutenant Governor with nomination powers, stating that his party would resist such moves in court.
Election Results on October 8
Jammu and Kashmir’s election results will be announced on October 8, after the region voted in its first election since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
