A love story that began during the Emergency

The love story of Sushma Swaraj and Swaraj Kaushal feels almost like a film. They came from different political beliefs—Sushma was part of the Jan Sangh (now BJP), while Swaraj Kaushal followed socialist ideology. They met in 1975 during the Emergency, when both were young lawyers defending George Fernandes. Working closely on the case brought them together, and they fell in love.

With their families’ approval, they got married on July 13, 1975. Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) himself blessed their union. Sushma Swaraj often said that whatever she achieved in life was because of her abilities, but her strength came from the unwavering support of her husband.
