Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan a distinguished Indian space scientist who served as Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) until April 25 2025 died at his Bengaluru residence when he reached 84. The recent months had been difficult for him due to age-related diseases.
Early Life And Education
Dr. Kasturirangan came into existence on October 24, 1940 within the town of Ernakulam which resides in Kerala. Dr. Kasturirangan completed his education in the field of physics and received his Ph.D. degree.
A Stellar Career At ISRO
The Indian Space Research Organisation saw his professional life become distinguished by sustained advancements in national space initiatives. From 1994 to 2003 Dr. Kasturirangan led ISRO as its fifth Chairman during which time he managed development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). As Director of India’s remote sensing satellites he became responsible for leading the development of Bhaskara I and II before serving as the Project Director for these Earth observation missions.

Architect Of India’s Education Reform
Dr. Kasturirangan used his expertise to lead the development of India’s education policy alongside his space science work. As the committee chair he guided the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 development process which aimed to modernize and transform the Indian education system. Dr. Kasturirangan dedicated himself to education through his work as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission while serving as the head of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Awards And Honors
Due to his exemplary service Dr. Kasturirangan earned India’s top three civilian honors which included the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
Final Tributes And Public Viewing
A public viewing of his body will be held at the Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Sunday April 27 for admirers along with colleagues and members of the public to convey their homage.
