The protest took place outside Multanmal Bhikhchand Chhajed Women’s College in Barmer district, where students were demanding a rollback of the recent fee hike. Two student leaders associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also joined the protest.

College students accused the police of acting only after one of the student leaders referred to the district collector as a 'reel star' during the protest. They claimed that this comment was the sole reason behind the detention of the student leaders.

Police later arrested the two student leaders and took them to the Kotwali police station, citing concerns over public order. Following the arrests, several women students marched to the police station and began a sit-in protest, demanding the immediate release of the detained leaders.

The incident drew political attention and heightened tension in the area. Authorities said the situation is being monitored as talks continue between students, the college administration, and local officials.

As per India Today report, District Collector Tina Dabi, dismissed the controversy, calling the detention a routine measure to maintain law and order. She said officials were subjected to misbehaviour during the protest and police acted to prevent the situation from escalating.

She added that the student leaders were released without any case being registered, signalling an attempt to defuse tensions as protests continued to simmer in the district.
