Who Is Sharda Sinha? Iconic Bihar Folk Singer On Ventilator Support

Sharda Sinha, a renowned folk singer, is critically ill and is receiving care at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. She has been put on a Ventilator and is in critical condition. PM Narendra Modi reached out to the family of Padma Bhushan Awardee to inquire about her health.

She has been battling multiple myeloma, which is a type of blood cancer, since 2018. She was put on a Ventilator on Monday at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Over the years, her voice has become synonymous with the Chhath festival, which is widely celebrated in Bihar and other parts of North India. Her famous songs like ‘Babool’ from ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ earned her not just fame but also critical acclaim.

In 2018, she was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for her contribution to the arts. She has also won a National Film Award, cementing her legacy as one of the leading voices in regional cinema.

In a conversation with ANI, Anshuman confirmed that PM Modi had personally assured him of all necessary support for his mother’s treatment.

Who is Sharda Sinha?


Sharda Sinha, 72, who has been conferred with the title of “Bihar Kokila” is known for her folk renditions during Chhath Puja. She received Padma Bhushan in 2018 for her contribution to Indian Music and culture. Sharda Sinha has also won a National Film Award.

Some of her famous songs include Kahe Toh Se Sajna in actor Salman Khan’s 1989 film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and Pahile Pahil which is a song played during Chhath Puja.

She has written many more songs for Chhath like Ho Deenath and Kelwa Ke Paat Par. Sinha dedicated her life to preserving folk music, primarily in Maithili and Bhojpuri.
