Members of the Karni Sena attacked the house of Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ramji Lal Suman in Agra, Uttar Pradesh,on Wednesday, because of his controversial remarks about Rana Sanga. The angry Karni Sena members arrived at his house with a bulldozer in the afternoon. Before this, they had protested outside the Samajwadi Party office in Madhya Pradesh to show their disagreement with Ramji Lal Suman’s remark about the Rajput warrior Rana Sanga.
Controversial Comments Spark Debate
On March 21, Samajwadi Party (SP) Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman caused a stir by calling the Rajput ruler Rana Sanga a ‘traitor‘. His comments came during a speech in the Rajya Sabha, where he claimed that Rana Sanga invited Mughal emperor Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi, which led to Babur’s invasion of India. Suman suggested that if Muslims are descendants of Babur, then Hindus should be considered descendants of Rana Sanga, who he called a traitor. His remarks angered many, leading to a backlash.
Historical Background of Rana Sanga
Rana Sanga was a ruler from the Sisodia clan of Rajputs and ruled Mewar from 1508 to 1528. He led an alliance of Rajputs against Babur but lost the Battle of Khanwa in 1527, which helped establish Mughal control in India.
Reaction from Rightwing Groups and BJP
Suman’s comments were criticized by rightwing groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Karni Sena. BJP Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat called the comments “ignorant” and said only a person with a “small heart” could make such statements.
Akhilesh Yadav Defends Suman
Despite the backlash, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav defended Suman, saying that everyone is looking at history differently. He argued that if Suman referred to a historical fact, there was nothing wrong with it. Yadav criticized the BJP for focusing on history when they should be addressing current issues.
