Initial reports about the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta name the accused as Rajesh Khimji Sakariya, a 41-year-old from Rajkot. On Wednesday morning, around 9 a.m., Sakariya suddenly assaulted Gupta. Brandishing a letter, he charged toward her, shouting, before slapping the Chief Minister and attempting to grab her hand to continue the attack, as others scrambled to intervene.
It is believed that Sakariya approached Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to seek help in securing a relative’s release. Multiple reports indicate that Delhi Police have contacted Gujarat Police to verify the accused’s identity and residence details. According to reports, Sakariya presented himself to the Chief Minister, handed her a document, and then initiated the attack. His potential political affiliations remain unconfirmed. The incident took place during CM Gupta’s weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her residence, where citizens gather to voice their grievances.
Sureshbhai, a neighbour of Rajesh Khimji, described him as a generous individual known to him for six years. “I’ve known Rajesh for five or six years. He is a kind-hearted man with a strong affection for animals,” Sureshbhai said.
