The Shiv Sena workers vandalised the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar on Sunday following controversial remarks made by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra during his show at the ‘The Unicontinental Mumbai’. Tensions escalated over Kamra’s alleged mockery statements targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His statements have drawn a massive outrage from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.
Who Is Kumal Kamra?
Born on 3rd October 1988, Kunal Kamra is one of the popular stand-up comedians, infamous for his political satires. His controversial statements against the government and political parties have often landed him in trouble. Kamra studied Commerce at Jai Hind College, an autonomous college in Mumbai. However, he dropped out, and 11 years later in 2013, made his stand-up comedy debut at Canvas Laugh Club. He launched a TV program ‘Shut Up Ya Kunal’ alongside Ramit Verma in 2017.
He hit the headlines in 2020 following a clash with Arnab Goswami during a flight with IndiGo. Kamra confronted the Journalist over his coverage of Rohit Vemula’s suicide case. Later IndiGo banned him from flying with the airline for about six months after he filmed the encounter and posted it on social media. He also faced a similar ban from other airlines such as Air India and Spice Jet. Kamra has a massive 1 million fan following on Instagram and over 2.3 million subscribers on YouTube.
About The Whole Controversy
The event occurred over the weekend when the comedian made a provocative reference to Shinde’s role during the 2022 rebellion against then Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray. During his performance at the hotel, Kamra used offensive words like ‘Gaddar, Dalbadlu’, etc in an indirect reference to DCM Shinde. He also sang a modified version of Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ referring to the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis.
The comedian also mentioned CM Devendra Fadnavis, stating, ‘Mantralay se zyada, Fadnavis ki godi mein mil jaaye.” The lyrics began with the lines, “Thane ki rickshaw, Chehre pe daadhi…” Following this, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel has filed an FIR against Kamra and demanded strict actions against him.
