How Old Monk Was Born?

The story began in December 1954, when entrepreneur Ved Rattan Mohan introduced a special dark rum crafted as a tribute to Benedictine monks he met during a trip to Europe. Inspired by their skill and craftsmanship, he created a rum that was aged for seven years in oak barrels and mixed with a unique blend of spices.

This new drink Old Monk quickly earned a reputation for its warm flavor and honesty. What made it extraordinary was that it grew without a single advertisement. Its success came purely from taste, loyalty, and word of mouth. Today, Old Monk is exported to 22 countries with a market worth over USD 10.3 million, and it ranks among the world’s top three best-selling rums.

Who Is Kapil Mohan?

Brigadier Kapil Mohan began his career not as an entrepreneur, but as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces. He served with great honor and was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service.

His military background shaped his approach to business. Discipline, patience, and respect for tradition became the foundation on which Old Monk was built.

Beyond business, he contributed to society through leadership roles in institutions like Narendra Mohan Hospital, and he served as a patron of the General Mohyal Sabha, supporting community causes. He also held directorial positions in several other companies and completed a PhD during his career.

A Sudden Responsibility

After Ved Rattan Mohan’s untimely death, his brother Brigadier Kapil Mohan took charge of the company, Mohan Meakin. Under his leadership, Old Monk reached unmatched heights. He refused to rely on marketing gimmicks, confident that once people tasted Old Monk, they would never settle for anything else.

His belief proved right. The brand became a cultural symbol representing Indian craftsmanship, trust, and simplicity.

Kapil Mohan also expanded the company’s product line into cereals, fruit juices, and mineral water. But Old Monk remained the heart of the business and the legacy he is remembered for.

A Legacy That Lives On

Brigadier Kapil Mohan passed away in 2018 after a heart attack. The day-to-day operations of the company are now handled by his nephews, Hemant and Vinay Mohan. Even today, Old Monk remains a symbol of authenticity proof that a brand built on trust, craftsmanship, and loyal customers can thrive without flashy advertising.

Brigadier Mohan’s legacy is not just a popular rum. It is a reminder that true quality doesn’t need noise; it simply needs dedication.
