Who is Deepak Prakash? MIT graduate sworn in as Bihar Minister without being MLA or MLC

The new Bihar government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has taken shape with a strong representation from the BJP, JD(U), and allied parties. Key BJP leaders such as Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Mangal Pandey, Nitin Nabin, Ram Kripal Yadav, Sanjay Singh ‘Tiger’, Arun Shankar Prasad, Surendra Mehta, Narayan Prasad, Rama Nishad, Lakhendra Kumar Raushan, Shreyasi Singh and others have been inducted into the cabinet.

Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha’s son Deepak Prakash’s induction as a minister into the CM Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government came as a surprise to everyone. Prakash, who is neither an MLA nor a member of the state Legislative Council, was sworn in as the sole minister from his party by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Thursday at the grand oath-taking ceremony held in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan.

Who is Deepak Prakash?

While there were speculation that Kushwaha’s wife, Snehlata, elected from Sasaram assembly seat, might be included in the new cabinet, his son was inducted. Born on October 22, 1989, Deepak Prakash is a 37-year-old politician with a background in engineering, having earned a B. Tech in Computer Science from Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). Before entering politics, he worked as a software engineer from 2011 to 2013 and later ventured into self-employment.

Not new in politics

While Prakash’s association with politics may seem new, it isn’t really the case; as his political journey began alongside his father around 2019-2020, actively participating in the party work. He continues the political legacy of his family, with his mother Snehlata Kushwaha currently serving as an MLA from Sasaram. When asked about his confident political demeanour, Prakash stated that he has been actively involved in RLM’s work for the last 4-5 years and is not new to politics. “I have been given the ministerial position, but I am not new to politics. I have seen my father working since childhood. I myself have been active in party work for the last 4-5 years,” he said.

Well, his induction wasn’t the only thing that caught attention yesterday, his causal, cool and informal attire during the swearing-in ceremony also grabbed headlines. When question about that he said, “The more you look at politics from the perspective of ordinary people, everything becomes easier. I took the oath in the attire I was comfortable with.”
