After resignation of AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi Chief Minister, AAP leader Atishi is all set to take oath as the CM around 4:30 PM today.
Atishi will be the third woman CM of Delhi after Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj. She is also said to become the youngest CM in India.
Early Life And Education
Atishi was born on 8 June 1981 to Delhi University professors Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi into a Rajput family. Born and brought up in Delhi, she completed her schooling from The Springdales Schools and graduated from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. She holds an Oxford master’s degree in History and is also a Rhodes Scholar. Her middle name ‘Marlena’ is given by her parents which is believed to be a portmanteau of Marx and Lenin. Atishi removed ‘Marlena’ from her name before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Personal Life
Atishi married Praveen Singh who belongs to a Punjabi Rajput family in 2006. Praveen is a researcher and educator associated with institutes like Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics. Praveen Singh has studied from IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad. He worked in the corporate sector for about 8 years. He has worked in consultancy firms in India and America. After this, he joined social service. He is rarely seen in public.
Rise of Atishi in Politics
Atishi joined AAP in 2013 but began her active political career after serving as an advisor to former Delhi Deputy CM & AAP leader Manish Sisodia from 2015-2018. She participated in Jal Satyagraha protest in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh which was a part of Narmada Bachao Andolan.
She was made in-charge of AAP’S Goa unit after 2020 elections. Her rise in Delhi Politics began with her win in 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election where she defeated BJP leader Dharambir Singh. She contested from Kalkaji constituency of South Delhi. She was inducted into Delhi government after the resignation of former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia & former Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain. After the arrest of AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal by the ED in Delhi excise policy scam, she played active role in rallying against the BJP.
As a minister in Delhi cabinet she held various portfolios including Finance, Revenue, PWD, Power, Services, Women and Child development and Education.
Atishi tried her luck in Lok Sabha elections of 2019, but lost to former BJP leader Gautam Gambhir from East Delhi Constituency.
Net Worth Of Atishi
According to the affidavit submitted by Atishi during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, she has movable and immovable assets worth Rs 1 crore 41 lakh. This also includes her husband’s income. She has deposits in various financial firms. Atishi had told in 2019 that she does not have any assets like car and jewellery.
