The Jeevika Didi Scheme is a government initiative in Bihar designed to empower women by helping them become financially independent. Part of the larger JEEVIKA (Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project), the program focuses on providing support, training and financial aid to women so they can start small businesses and improve their livelihoods.
How the scheme helps women
Under the scheme, women join self-help groups (SHGs) at the village or community level. Each woman, known as a ‘Jeevika Didi,’ receives an initial cash support of Rs 10,000 to start small ventures like tailoring, farming, animal husbandry, handicrafts or small trade. After successfully running their business for six months, some women may get additional support of up to Rs 2 lakh to expand or stabilise their venture.
The program also focuses on building networks among women, so they can support each other and share knowledge. Currently, JEEVIKA operates in thousands of villages across 38 districts in Bihar, with over one crore women participating. Many beneficiaries have reported earning between Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 per month through their businesses.
Impact and growing attention
The scheme has transformed the lives of women like Reema Devi from West Champaran, who became financially independent after starting a small shop through Jeevika support. It not only provides income but also dignity, confidence and social recognition to marginalised women.
For many women in Bihar, the Jeevika Didi Scheme is more than just financial aid, it is a pathway to self-reliance, empowerment and a better future for themselves and their families.
