All ICF coaches are made of steel and their life is 25 years , this is the reason why they are used as passenger bogies. After their tenure of 25 years, they are taken off teh dirty.  Beyond that the LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) are made of stainless steel and their life is around 30 years. Different types of Stripes on Train Coaches

The lines that are painted on the coaches indicate the type of coach and its use. White lines are general coaches, yellow for handicapped /medical coaches, green for ladies, while red and others are for premium or special class coaches. This makes it easier for the passenger to identify. These symbols are an important part of the railway's communication system for passengers who are unable to read.

Here’s what different colors mean

White Line: This indicates that it is a general coach, which does not have any reservations.

  • Yellow Line: A yellow line on a coach indicates that the coach is reserved for differently abled passengers.
  • Green Line: This means that the coach is reserved for  Women and these are highlighted with green colour for easy recognition.
  • Red Line - often used on premium trains, it indicates First Class AC coach or higher class, while in Mumbai local, it is meant for the first class.
  • Grey/Light Blue Colour: Nowadays, grey and light blue colours are being used to give a new look to ICF coaches, similar to the trains like the Shatabdi.

Other signs to look out for

In addition to the lines on the train coaches, there are other ways to indicate the class. The H1 and A1 signs that are placed on the  coaches  indicate the class of the coach. It's worth noting that the lines and colors on the coaches are a visual communication system of the Indian Railways.  These help passengers. To be able to easily identify the coaches.
