Weather Update: Monsoon rains are causing floods in many areas across the country. Rain is expected in 20 states today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the monsoon trough extends from sea level to Jaisalmer, Bhilwara, Raisen, Rajnandgaon, and Puri, reaching 1.5 km above sea level into the Bay of Bengal. Cyclonic circulation is also forming 1.5 km above sea level in northeastern Assam and surrounding areas, as well as in South Gujarat.
The IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rains in parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya today, issuing a red alert for these states. East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Konkan, and Goa will also likely experience heavy to very heavy rains.
Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, and Coastal Karnataka can expect heavy rains in isolated places. The IMD has issued an orange alert for UP and Bihar due to the expected rain.
The IMD predicts thunderstorms and lightning in parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Winds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph, possibly reaching 55 kmph, are expected in many parts of the East Central and West Central Arabian Sea, northern Southwest Arabian Sea, Gulf of Mannar, Sri Lanka coast, Southwest and Southeast Bay of Bengal, Central Bay of Bengal, Northwest Bay of Bengal, North Andhra Pradesh, and South Odisha coasts.
Strong winds, potentially reaching up to 65 kmph, are expected along and around the Somalia coast, southwest Arabian Sea, northern parts, most parts of the west-central Arabian Sea, and the south Oman coast. Fishermen are advised to avoid these areas.
