Weather Update: Dense fog to grip over 15 states; IMD issues cold wave alert in Punjab, Delhi-NCR, UP, Bihar

IMD Weather Update: Minimum temperatures remained above at many places, as intense cold and dense fog affected visibility and caused traffic disruptions.

IMD Weather Update: Chilly weather conditions continue to tighten their grip across Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting severe cold wave conditions in several places during this week. Minimum temperatures remained above at many places, as intense cold and dense fog affected visibility and caused traffic disruptions. Persistent fog has affected a significant portion of the country, heightening health concerns.

Dense Fog Warning

Dense fog conditions are expected in multiple states over the next 24 hours. IMD has forecast foggy conditions to prevail during night and morning hours in many parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab till December 28, 2025. Similar weather conditions will prevail over Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, , Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Chandigarh on December 29. The other affected states are:

  • Bihar: December 25
  • East Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Gangetic West Bengal, Sikkim: December 25 and 26
  • Odisha: Till December 29
  • Assam, Meghalaya: Till December 29
  • Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura: Till December 27
  • Delhi-NCR: From Dec 29 to 31

Cold wave warning

Nail-biting cold temperatures will be witnessed at several isolated places. IMD has forecast cold wave conditions in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan until December 27. Cold or severe cold day conditions are also expected in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar until December 28.

Delhi-NCR AQI, weather update

The air Quality in the national capital improved to the ‘poor’ category on Thursday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 221 at 7 am today, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi has forecast AQI to likely remain under the ‘moderate’ category until December 26. IMD has issued a yellow alert in Delhi on December 26 and 27 in view of dense fog at isolated places during morning hours.
