Dense fog blankets Delhi-NCR, IMD forecasts cold wave, light rain across several states — Check weather predictions for UP, Punjab, Haryana, Mumbai, Bengaluru

A western disturbance is intensifying the cold wave across North India, bringing dense morning fog and lower temperatures to Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. IndiGo issued a travel advisory, warning of possible flight delays due to reduced visibility.

Temperatures are steadily falling across the country, with mornings and nights becoming colder. Dense fog is affecting many regions during this cold spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that morning fog may continue in several areas in the coming days. Dense fog is expected on the morning of December 17 in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi may also experience dense fog. Similar conditions could develop in Himachal Pradesh by December 18.

Light rain or snowfall is possible in isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh between December 18 and 21. Snowfall is also expected in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Minimum temperatures in northwest India are likely to drop by about 2 degree Celsius, while Maharashtra, central, eastern, and northeastern India will see little change in temperatures over the next few days.

Delhi-NCR Weather Update

In Delhi-NCR, skies will remain clear on December 17 and 18, with light fog possible in the mornings. On December 17, maximum temperatures are expected between 24 degree Celsius and 26 degree Celsius, and minimum temperatures between 10 degree Celsius and 12 degree Celsius. On December 18, the maximum will range from 23 degree Celsius to 25 degree Celsius, and the minimum between 8 degree Celsius and 10 degree Celsius.

IndiGo issued travel advisory

On Tuesday night, IndiGo issued a travel advisory for Wednesday morning, warning of reduced visibility and slower flight operations due to foggy conditions affecting North and East India.  “As the morning approaches under misty winter skies, fog is predicted across parts of North and East India, which may lead to reduced visibility and a slower pace of flight movements during the early hours. In the interest of safety, some flights may experience delays or adjustments.” The airline is taking proactive measures to ensure safety, with some flights likely to be delayed or adjusted. “Our teams across airports are fully prepared and working in close coordination to manage schedules smoothly, assist customers, and maintain a steady flow of operations,” in a post shared by IndiGo on X.

Delhi is currently dealing with smog, fog, and high pollution levels. Poor visibility at Delhi airport on Tuesday disrupted flight operations, leading to cancellations. IndiGo reported canceling 110 flights across its network due to adverse weather conditions.

Temperature drops in southern regions

Bengaluru has recorded minimum temperatures between 12-14°C. This cold spell, expected to continue for a week, is also impacting air quality. Residents in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are experiencing an unusual drop in temperature for this time of year.

Residents Struggle with Pollution and Health Issues

People in Delhi-NCR are experiencing frequent coughing and respiratory discomfort due to poor air quality. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that although efforts are ongoing, more time is needed to tackle the problem effectively. He assured that the government is taking strong measures to address the pollution challenge.
