IMD Weather Update: As the country braces for a mixed spell of intense weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned against cold waves and dense fog conditions in multiple regions. Cold weather has already tightened its grip on the northern states. While the overall weather will remain largely normal in the coming days, chilly conditions are expected to prevail at night due to a significant drop in temperatures.
Cold Wave Warning
According to IMD, cold wave conditions will likely prevail at a few places over Chhattisgarh, in isolated pockets over Madhya Pradesh, north Vidarbha, and Odisha on December 8 and 9. The rise in cold can be attributed to westerly winds that have swept many regions. Meanwhile, the national capital is also experiencing a rapid increase in cold waves. The minimum temperature is expected to drop to around 6°C in Delhi.
During the past 24 hours, chilly conditions were witnessed over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and Odisha. A gradual fall by 2-3 degree Celsius is forecasted over western India during the next three to 4 days and no significant change thereafter.
Dense Fog Warning
Dense fog conditions are expected to occur during the early morning hours in the following isolated pockets:
December 8 to 12: Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura
December 8: West Madhya Pradesh
December 8 to 10: Himachal Pradesh
December 8 and 9: Odisha

The other affected states are Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Snowfall Forecast
The Kashmir Valley is experiencing a steady increase in chilly weather. The temperature has dropped below zero degrees in many areas, while in Pahalgam it has reached minus 4.3 degrees Celsius. Snowfall is expected in several hilly areas over the next 24 hours.
