Weather report today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday that Cyclone Mandous had made landfall. On Friday evening, Cyclonic Mandous made landfall off the coast of Mamallapuram, causing moderate to severe rains across coastal Tamil Nadu. however, It is not the enough another cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over South Andaman Sea by December 13th.

Cyclone Mandous details

Following the landfall, Mandous is expected to diminish to a deep depression and then a depression on Saturday. “Cyclone MANDOUS has moved into land and the landfall process has been finished; it is highly likely to proceed approximately west northwestwards and gradually weaken into a deep depression within the next 2 hours and into a depression by noon on December 10th,” IMD said in a tweet at 4:48 a.m.

Cyclone Mandous made landfall off the coast of Mamallapuram, causing heavy rain and severe winds in numerous parts of Chennai. “Cyclone Mandous crossed the coast and is in deep depression, and its strength is reducing,” said S Balachandran, DDGM, RMC Chennai. “Areas in northwest districts would see strong winds of 55-65 kmph, which will further reduce by evening to 30-40 kmph.”

However, Another cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over South Andaman Sea by December 13th.

Today weather report: cyclone impact

Whereas the cold in North India is becoming increasingly severe, rain is anticipated in South Indian states as early as today.

The cyclone is located 55 kilometres north-northwest of Mahabalipuram and 40 kilometres west-southwest of Chennai. Its effect is expected to cause mild to moderate rainfall in most parts of the state, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas over north interior Tamil Nadu.

Mandous made landfall in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) between 10.30 p.m. and 11.15 p.m. on Friday, with winds gusting to 85 kmph. In the early hours of Saturday, it crossed the coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota before fading into a deep depression. By noon, it is expected to deteriorate further into a depression.

12 cyclones have crossed the coast between Chennai and Puducherry in the last 121 years (1891-2021). Mandous is the 13th cyclone to make landfall in the region. Mandous is an Arabic term that means “treasure box.” It is pronounced “Man-Dous.” The United Arab Emirates gave it that name.

A new Western Disturbance may bring light to moderate rain and snow to Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh, Jammu Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between today and December 11, according to private weather forecasting organisation Skymet Weather.
