New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said that we have got lithium in Jammu and Kashmir. If we use this lithium-ion strategically, we will become the number one automobile manufacturer in the world.

Speaking at a program of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Union Minister said that there is a need to encourage public transport, and in it, electric buses are the future. Lithium is an important aspect of making batteries.  we import 1,200 tonnes of lithium every year, he added.

The Union Minister said that at present India’s automobile industry is stand at Rs 7.5 lakh crore. The automobile sector contributes the most to the total Goods and Service Tax (GST) revenue received by the government.

Earlier, an estimated 5.9 million tonne reserve of Lithium was discovered in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
