New Delhi: Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy congratulated his son-in-law Rishi Sunak on Monday for ascending to the post of Prime Minister of Britain.
“Congratulations to Rishi. We are proud of him and wish him success. We are confident he will do his best for the people of the United Kingdom,” Narayana Murthy said in his first comments about Sunak’s win in the race to lead both the United Kingdom and the Conservative Party, news agency PTI reported.
Sunak is married to Narayana Murthy’s daughter Akshata Murthy and the couple have two daughters – Krishna, 11, and Anoushka, 9.
The 42-year-old on Monday became UK’s first Indian origin PM after he won the race to lead the Conservative Party.
Sunak was UK’s chancellor under the Boris Johnson government and is widely appreciated for his economic policies during the pandemic.
Sunak is the UK-born son of India-origin general practitioner father Yashvir and pharmacist mother Usha. His family migrated to the UK from East Africa in the 1960s.
Born in southern England, the former chancellor studied at Oxford University and Stanford University, where he met wife Akshata.
In 2015, Rishi Sunak was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Richmond, Yorkshire. He was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020, the most significant cabinet position in Britain.
Sunak was in the race for the PM’s post after Liz Truss stepped down as PM of the UK on October 20.
