In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced a tense and tumultuous session in Parliament on Monday. Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP, passionately criticized the ruling BJP and its ideological ally, the RSS, showing a copy of the Constitution and images of religious figures such as Lord Shiva, Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ, and Guru Nanak Singh.

During a tumultuous session marked by MPs shouting from all sides, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Leader of the Opposition for his remarks, stating that connecting violence with any religion is incorrect. He called on him to apologize, emphasizing that millions of people proudly identify themselves as Hindu and that such generalizations are unwarranted.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also accused Mr Gandhi of spreading misinformation about ex-gratia payments to families of Agniveer military recruits killed on duty. Prime Minister Modi responded twice to counter Rahul Gandhi’s statements during the chaotic proceedings.

The uproar was sparked by Rahul Gandhi’s direct criticism of the BJP and RSS, alleging violence against minorities. He asserted, “Our great leaders advocated non-violence, but those claiming to be Hindus only speak of hatred… you are not even Hindu.”

“Labeling the entire Hindu society as violent is a grave accusation,” Mr. Modi countered.  However, it was his second intervention that drew criticism from his opponents; the Prime Minister stated that the Constitution had taught him to respect the position of the Leader of the Opposition, currently held by Mr. Gandhi.

Mr. Gandhi began his speech by asserting a comprehensive and systematic assault on the idea of India, its Constitution, and those who opposed these attacks. He highlighted that many opposition leaders had faced personal attacks, emphasizing that some remained incarcerated.

The reference appeared to be directed at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whose AAP is aligned with the Congress-led INDIA opposition alliance. Mr. Kejriwal is currently in Delhi’s Tihar Jail following his arrest in a case related to the liquor policy.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
