The reason for revising the counting date for these two states is that the term of their legislative Assemblies concludes on June 2. Holding the vote counting on June 4 would result in a brief period where Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim have no elected Assembly. To prevent this gap, the Election Commission has decided to conduct the vote counting on June 2, ensuring that election results are available before the current Assembly’s term expires.

However, the Election Commission has clarified that there will be no alterations to the timetable for Parliamentary elections in these states.

Election Commission’s Announcement

On March 16, the Election Commission of India unveiled the schedule for the eagerly anticipated Lok Sabha elections, as well as the assembly polls in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. The Lok Sabha elections for the 543 parliamentary constituencies will span across seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1. Phase 1 polling is slated for April 19, followed by phase 2 on April 26, phase 3 on May 7, phase 4 on May 13, phase 5 on May 20, phase 6 on May 25, and the final phase, phase 7, on June 1.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar announced that a staggering 96.8 crore voters will have the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The electoral process will involve the deployment of 10.5 lakh polling stations, along with 1.5 crore polling officials and security personnel. Additionally, 55 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be utilized for the voting process.
