A recent viral video showing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar refusing to wear a ‘topi’ at a madrasa event is turning heads. His actions, however, stand in contrast to a statement he made twelve years ago. In 2013, the JDU chief had offered unsolicited advice to then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi without naming him directly. “To run the country, you have to take everyone along. At times you will have to wear a topi (cap), at times a tilak (vermillion),” Nitish had said.
Fast forward to today, the striking contrast has sparked a buzz on social media. The refusal to wear a ‘topi’ now is in contrast to his earlier remark aimed at PM Modi. Nitish Kumar’s unexpected move has reignited debate over his current political stance. The irony, however, is that Kumar has been spotted wearing the kurta-topi on several occasions in the past.

What Exactly Happened?
Nitish Kumar refused to wear a cap, commonly worn by Muslims, at an event organised by the Bihar State Madrasa Education Board. He instead placed the cap on the head of his party colleague, Mohd Zama Khan. The JDU chief’s action comes just months ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, especially at a time when all opposition parties are actively wooing the 18% minority vote bank.
