Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is in trouble after making a bold statement that could cost him his name. Known for getting very excited during speeches, Mr. Sharif said that his name would stop existing if Pakistan doesn’t surpass India in terms of economy and development.
During his recent visit to Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab, Pakistan, Mr. Sharif was seen getting very excited at a public rally. He was raising his fists, jumping at the podium, and banging his hand on the desk while speaking.
While assuring the people that his government is working hard to improve the country, Mr. Sharif said, “We will work day and night to make things better in Pakistan. The Almighty has always blessed Pakistan.” But then, with a burst of energy, he added, “My name won’t be Shehbaz Sharif if Pakistan doesn’t leave India behind in development and progress.”
He also made a promise by swearing on his elder brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s life. “I am Nawaz Sharif’s fan and follower. I swear on his life that as long as I have the strength, we will all work together to make Pakistan great and defeat India.”

Shehbaz Sharif visited Dera Ghazi Khan to reassure the people that his government is focused on solving their economic and social problems. During his visit, he announced some important infrastructure projects for the area. Pakistan has been struggling with a serious financial crisis for several years and is carrying a heavy debt, which has led to tough measures to pay it off.
After his speech, which was shared widely on social media, Mr. Sharif faced a lot of criticism. Many people accused him of making “big promises” without any real action to back them up. Some users on X even mocked the Pakistani prime minister.
Just a couple of weeks before promising to “defeat India,” Mr. Sharif had called for talks with New Delhi. India has said many times that talks can only happen if Pakistan stops terrorism in its country. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has stated, “Talks and terror cannot go hand-in-hand.”
