The Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi resembled a battlefield late Tuesday night when unruly students and Factorial security personnel clashed. Angered by the use of mild force by Factorial security personnel, the students resorted to heavy stone-pelting. Seeing the situation worsen, the BHU administration enlisted the help of the police, who then deployed forces from multiple police stations and the PAC. Dozens of security personnel, students, and police officers were injured during the hours-long guerrilla warfare. The ACP stated that everything is normal for now.
What happened on Tuesday night?
Late Tuesday night, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus in Varanasi erupted into chaos as unruly students clashed with Factorial security personnel. The confrontation began after students reacted angrily to the mild use of force by security staff, escalating into heavy stone-pelting. As the situation worsened, the BHU administration sought police assistance, leading to the deployment of forces from multiple police stations and the PAC. Dozens of students, security personnel, and police officers were injured during the hours-long clashes. According to the ACP, the situation has now returned to normal.
During the three-hour unrest, repeated stone-throwing and physical confrontations marked the campus, necessitating reinforcements to restore order.
Not only this, the students also broke several chairs and destroyed numerous banners and posters related to the Kashi Tamil Sangamam. ACP Bhelupur Gaurav Kumar stated that a dispute had broken out between students and security personnel at BHU. Seeing the situation escalate, the Chief Proctor called the police, and a police force arrived at the scene. Everything is normal now. There is no problem. Regarding the reason behind the dispute, the ACP stated that it was an internal campus matter, and the Proctor would explain it.
What triggered the chaos in Banaras University?
It is reported that the clash was triggered after a confrontation occurred between the BHU students and a student outside the Rajaram hostel. When the Proctorial Security personnel arrived, they apprehended the unruly students and took away the factorial board. This angered the students, who began protesting outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence. This is when the stone-throwing began. Enraged, the students also broke dozens of flower pots near the LD Guest House.
