Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: Snow clearance operations are currently underway on the National Highway-5 in Himachal’s Narkanda town after a few regions received thick snowfall. The Lahaul and Spiti districts were covered in a thick blanket of snow on Monday. As per the latest update, the region received light to moderate snowfall today as well. As a result, roads were blocked, vehicular movement was halted, and transportation was severely disrupted in several areas.
This posed challenges for both the residents and travelers who couldn’t swiftly manage their daily activities. Earlier, on February 28, over 500 roads and five National Highways were reportedly blocked. Additionally, 279 water supply schemes were affected last Friday. According to reports, many vehicles were carried off or trapped in sludge in the lower areas of the Kullu district. The situation arose after incessant torrential rain triggered severe landslides.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a fresh Western Disturbance, likely to affect the Western Himalayan Region starting from the 9th of March, 2025. Under its influence, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will receive isolated to Scattered light/moderate rain and snowfall on March 9. Another western disturbance will likely cause fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rain/snowfall tomorrow.
Sandeep Kumar Sharma, IMD Senior Scientist (HP), earlier shared an update on the state’s weather conditions. He attributed the sudden change in climate to a few western disturbances that started affecting the region from February 25 and March 2. He noted, “Kangra, Chamba, and Lahaul Spiti will see heavy to very heavy snowfall. Kullu and Mandi will see heavy rainfall.” Sharma added that the weather is expected to clear throughout Himachal Pradesh on March 5.
