Nobel Laureate in Economics Claudia Goldin on Tuesday informed that veteran economist and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has passed at the age of 89, while Nandana Deb Sen, his daughter denies the reports.
“The daughter of veteran economist and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen – Nandana Deb Sen has denied the reports his demise,” PTI stated.
Amartya Kumar Sen BR, born on 3 November 1933, is an acclaimed Indian economist and philosopher. Since 1972, he has been actively engaged in teaching and research, splitting his time between the United Kingdom and the United States. Sen’s extensive body of work encompasses diverse fields such as welfare economics, social choice theory, economic and social justice, famine economics, decision theory, development economics, public health, and the measurement of a nation’s well-being.

Presently, he holds the esteemed position of Thomas W. Lamont University Professor and serves as a Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. Notably, he previously held the prestigious role of Master at Trinity College, University of Cambridge.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to welfare economics, Sen was honored with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998. Subsequently, he received India’s highest civilian accolade, the Bharat Ratna, in the following year. Further underscoring his influence and significance, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association awarded him the 2020 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
