A fiery argument broke out between the families of an IPS officer and an Income Tax commissioner during the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings. The incident occurred at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday night. The altercation reportedly took place in the Diamond Box- a section reserved for top officials and special guests. Here’s what unfolded that evening.
What Happened?
The altercation started when the IPS officer’s daughter stepped away to use the washroom, where she left her purse behind. A man, later identified as a relative of the income tax official, allegedly occupied the seat. When her brother requested him to vacate the seat, an argument ensued.
“Soon, the sister joined her brother while the man was joined by his wife, the income tax official, and their son. The argument intensified with each hurling abuse at the other. At one point, the confrontation between the IPS officer’s daughter and the man almost went out of control as the man was arguing in her face,” a senior police official told TOI.
The IPS officer and his wife were watching the match on TV when they were informed about the argument. They quickly went to the stadium and called senior police officers for help. However, when no help arrived, the officer’s wife took her children out of the stadium and filed a complaint at the Cubbon Park police station.
Police Complaint
The IPS officer’s family filed a complaint against the IT officer. In her complaint, she alleged that the man had made “unwelcome physical contact” with her daughter and “intruded on her privacy with the intention to offend her.” She also mentioned that her son recorded parts of the incident on video and pointed out that no police officers were present in the Diamond Box during the argument, which allegedly occurred between 9:40 pm and 10:20 pm.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 351 (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult), 75 (sexual harassment), and 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman).
The police summoned the IT officer and his wife, the accused, to the police station about two hours later. After an initial inquiry, they were allowed to leave. Senior police officers have not commented on the matter, citing the sensitive positions of those involved. “One is a senior IPS officer, the other a top income tax official. We are in a difficult position,” an officer familiar with the case told TOI. An investigation is currently underway.
