The trial runs of the Varanasi ropeway project are in full swing in the temple town. The project is slated to be operational by the end of this year. Although the project had already been delayed, the administration has now pulled up its socks and decided to commence operation from December. The city is set to have the first ropeway transportation system in the country.
The trial began in July and has been continuing to assess its operational efficiency. The exercise aims to improve service by recording any problems encountered. Earlier, the deadline was September 30, but it was not possible to complete the task by then. Now, the new deadline has been set for December.
The ropeway will start from Cantt and terminate at Godowlia. It will have five stations: Varanasi Cantonment, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girja Ghar, and Godowlia.
The ropeway service will cover the distance in nearly 15 minutes, which usually takes around 45-50 minutes by road. It will save significant time for commuters.
The project is being expeditiously completed so that the service becomes operational in December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the project in March 2023.
