Uttrakhand: Badrinath Temple ‘Kapat’ To Open For Devotees On May 4

The Badrinath Temple in Uttarakhand will welcome devotees again on May 4, 2025.

The Badrinath Temple in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district will open its doors for devotees at 6 AM on May 4, 2025. This announcement was made during a ceremony on Basant Panchami, a significant day in the Hindu calendar. The date was chosen after special prayers at the former royal court in Narendra Nagar, where royal priest Acharya Krishna Prasad Uniyal performed rituals to determine the auspicious time for the opening.

The event was attended by notable figures, including the former Maharaja of Tehri, Manvendra Shah, and other religious officials. The temple is one of the four Char Dham shrines, which also include Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. These temples traditionally close after Diwali and reopen for pilgrims in April or May.

During the previous year’s Char Dham yatra, over 5 million pilgrims visited these sacred sites, with a significant number completing their pilgrimage within the first month. Notably, the busiest period was between May 17 and 23, when more than half a million people visited the temples12. However, the 2024 yatra faced challenges as well, with 183 pilgrims reported to have passed away due to health issues during the first 100 days of the pilgrimage season.

The Badrinath Temple will remain open for six months until its closure in November, when the deity is worshipped at Nar Singh Temple in Joshimath during winter months.
