Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking incident that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, a 21-year-old man was swept away by the swollen Yamuna River’s strong currents on Wednesday afternoon. The youth has reportedly gone missing after he jumped into the water from a bridge on a Rs 500 bet put forth by his friends. The monsoon fury is currently in full swing across the country, and the Yamuna River has turned particularly hazardous.

The youth, identified as Mohd Junaid, was a daily wage worker. He was on leave from work due to torrential rains in Niwada village. In spite of continued search efforts by the National Disaster Response Force and Local police teams, Junaid remains untraceable. According to Shreshthha, Circle Officer (Baghpat), a search operation is ongoing, and every possible effort is being made to locate him.

Meanwhile, family members allege that Junaid was provoked to take such action by his friends. TOI quoted his elder brother Javed as saying, “They had challenged Junaid to swim across the fast-flowing river in return for a cash reward of Rs 500 and a celebratory party. They even assured him that they would also follow him into the water. He jumped in suddenly after his friends provoked him. At first, he was able to swim, but within moments, the strong current overpowered him and carried him away.”

He further claimed that Junaid’s friends fled the spot in panic instead of helping him. However, locals rushed to help him, but they were unable to reach him on time. The exact reason behind Junaid’s jump remains unknown as of now.
