We live in a time where social media has become a part of our daily lives. People either spend time creating the content on social media or consuming it. It has even become source of income for some people. There are different types of content on social media platforms, some are funny, motivating, loaded with entertainment and some are informative. Posts or videos go viral in seconds and reach millions of people with click. While some garner positive feedback or mixed reaction, others are severely trolled.
What’s In The Video?
One such video by a US based travel vlogger has gone viral in the internet and caught the eyes of netizens. Chris Takes Off, a youtuber has filmed a video where he is exploring New Delhi’s slum, Kusumpur Pahari. In his video, he has shown what really life is like in this slum, challenges faced by people, poor living conditions, lack of basic amenities. Along with that he drinks chai with locals, talks to strangers, tries local snacks and gets a shave at the local barbershop. He mentions that he was moved by the hospitality and kindness shown by people. He called it one of his nicest experiences abroad.
He mentioned that this is not the type of content he makes.
He stated that this place is in a complete mayhem. As the video progresses, Chris shows the area covered by garbage and dirt. He called it an ‘absurd living conditions’ which has human and animal feces lying in an open road. He said that people here face water problems, they drink polluted water, he added. He even showed the toilets which were dirty and he wondered how people use them.
Another clip which shows a harsh reality of the slum is children working and collecting garbage, he called their living conditions as ‘harsh’ and urged for donation from people to help those children.
While Chris’ video might have moved people but it’s not a story of just one slum. There are countless slums in India, where people live in extreme conditions, where living equals to death. They lack on basic facilities that are essential for survival. His video just exposes where we have failed despite of the tall promises made by political leaders regarding development, improved living standards and welfare of poor.

How Did Netizens React?
As of 12 October, his video has got 41,705 views and flooded by the comments. People have voiced their concern for improved living conditions of slum dwellers. One user wrote “We as a country need to improve our living conditions for sure. We are doing that steadily, not enough I guess but we are getting there. hope we will be there soon. Thank you for showing this.”
People have applauded his efforts and thanked him for showing grim realities of a slum. A user wrote, “Honestly, India is like a WORLD, which has everything. Some people in India have all the comforts and conveniences, while others live in sub-human conditions. You made me thank my life. Love and respect from India.” Another user said, “As an Indian, I’m glad that you are showing this. Many people like me who have all the luxuries don’t know such areas of the country much. Some people don’t understand that if they want India to develop, then such sides need to be shown first.”
Netizens called Chris’s video as an ‘eye opener’ and ‘heartening.’ They described the living conditions as ‘horrible.’
Well, people didn’t just comment about the stark reality of Kusumpur Pahari but also applauded the warmth, kindness and hospitality shown by the people of slum to Chris. They commended their gestures of offering tea and snacks to Chris. One user said, “Thanks for showing how generous the poorest can be.”
