The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session erupted into chaos as Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary moved a resolution seeking the restoration of Article 370, which was passed by a majority vote despite fierce opposition from BJP leaders.
The controversy began when Choudhary, representing the National Conference, introduced the resolution that reaffirmed the significance of special constitutional guarantees for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution expressed concern over the “unilateral removal” of these protections and called upon the Government of India to engage in dialogue with elected representatives to restore the special status and constitutional guarantees.
“This Assembly emphasises that any process for restoration must safeguard both national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people of JK,” the resolution stated. The motion received support from senior NC leader and Health Minister Sakina Itoo, as well as Independent MLAs and members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, the move was met with vehement opposition from Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, who questioned the procedural integrity of introducing a resolution while discussions were ongoing regarding the Lieutenant Governor’s address. “When business was about discussion on LG’s address, how can a resolution be moved?” Sharma argued, prompting heated exchanges between the BJP and National Conference members.
Tensions escalated as BJP MLAs protested vocally, with some even tearing copies of the resolution in a display of defiance. The Speaker, Abdur Rahim Rather, eventually put the resolution to a vote, where it was passed amid the uproar. The BJP continued its protests, leading the Speaker to adjourn the House for 15 minutes.

The resolution marks a significant moment in the ongoing political discourse surrounding Jammu and Kashmir, especially in light of the Centre’s decision on August 5, 2019, to revoke its special status and bifurcate the region into two Union Territories. The National Conference has consistently advocated for the restoration of statehood and special status as part of its manifesto.
As the assembly session continues, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
