A police constable in Uttar Pradesh faces suspension due to his controversial Facebook post supporting Palestine, officials said on Monday.
Constable Suhail Ansari, stationed in the Reserve Police Lines in Kheri, had posted a status on his Facebook account requesting financial aid for Palestine, accompanied by the statement: “Help save Palestine, 1 repost = $1.”
A social media user named Anupam Tiwari lodged a complaint regarding this matter with the Director General of Police, asserting that, “Following a terrorist attack on October 7, at a time when India is aligning with Israel, a UP constable is soliciting funds for Palestine.” Tiwari’s post gained significant traction on social media, prompting action from the Senior Superintendent of Police (Kheri), Ganesh Prasad Saha. He assigned Additional Superintendent of Police Naipal Singh to conduct a thorough investigation.
Subsequently, the initial inquiry confirmed that the post had indeed originated from Constable Ansari’s Facebook account. As a result, the Senior Superintendent of Police ordered Ansari’s suspension.
The Circle Officer (Sadar), Sandeep Kumar, explained, “Ansari’s online plea for donations to support Palestinians garnered widespread attention. Numerous complaints were filed against him, leading to his suspension by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).”
In his defense, Ansari contended that he was not the one who shared the post; it was, in fact, his underage son. He clarified, “My son, while playing a game, inadvertently shared a post related to Palestine from my phone. I wish to extend my apologies if this inadvertently caused any distress to anyone’s sentiments.”
