Uttar Pradesh leads the way in expressway development, with advanced expressways being constructed to connect regions of the state. One Such Expressway is Ganga Expressway. This expressway will boost connectivity in the state. This route will connect Meerut and Prayagraj, with plans to further extend it to Dehradun and Mirzapur. Once operational, it will cut travel time to 8 hours for people travelling from Merut to Prayagraj. Designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, the expressway will feature toll plazas along the route, including 12 ramp toll plazas to collect tolls from vehicles entering at intermediate points.
The Uttar Pradesh government has entered into an agreement with ETH Zurich University and Switzerland’s RTDT Laboratories AG to enhance the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway to world-class standards. The agreement aims to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor-based technologies to monitor the expressway’s quality and user comfort. Officials explained that this technology can identify and address road defects during construction. Once successfully implemented on the Ganga Expressway, the same technology will also be applied to the Gorakhpur Link Expressway.

This system was implemented by the government after it partnered with ETH Zurich and RTDT Laboratories AG.
The sensor-based devices and data collection equipment conduct real-time analysis of road quality. The technological system immediately detects road areas that do not satisfy the mandatory requirements. Once discovered during the construction phase these issues help cut down both maintenance costs and potential difficulties the government explained. Existing road quality auditing occurred only after construction finished leading to obstacles in repairing manufacturing errors. New road quality monitoring happens instantaneously through the utilization of Swiss technology at construction sites. Real-time road quality measurements from sensors identify distances between high and low points along with comfort standards so prompt corrective actions may be taken if needed.
