UP: Man Tries to End Life in Police Lockup, Slits Throat with Blade

ASP (West) Brijnandan Rai stated that the accused, Shivam Singh, a resident of Jamethi village in Kunda area, was brought to the police station for questioning.

A 22-year-old man attempted to take his own life by slitting his throat with a blade inside a police lockup in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh.

According to PTI, the incident took place at Manikpur Police Station, prompting the suspension of the Station House Officer (SHO), officials said.

ASP (West) Brijnandan Rai stated that the accused, Shivam Singh, a resident of Jamethi village in Kunda area, was brought to the police station for questioning.

“On the intervening night of October 22-23, Shivam used a blade to cut his throat inside the lockup. He was immediately taken to a local hospital and later referred to AIIMS, Raebareli, due to his critical condition,” PTI quoted Rai as saying.

Taking cognisance of the incident, Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Bhukar suspended the SHO, Deep Narayan, and ordered a departmental inquiry.

The youth was in police custody in connection with a bike theft, and a probe has been launched into how long he was in custody and under what circumstances he took this step.
