Uttar Pradesh: In a tragic incident that occurred outside Barabanki’s Awshaneshwar Mahadev Temple, two devotees died after being electrocuted in the early hours of Monday. According to reports, several people were injured as the electric shock triggered a stampede-like situation at the temple. Barabanki DM Shashank Tripathi said that the devotees had arrived at the temple to offer prayers on the third Monday of the ‘Saavan’ month. Around 19 people sustained injuries after an electric wire broke and fell on the shed.
Following the incident, the police reached the spot immediately and initiated rescue and relief efforts. The injured were rushed to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centres. The DM added, “Two people are in critical condition and have been referred to the District Hospital… The law and order situation is normal here.” An ex gratia of Rs 5 lakhs has been announced for the bereaved families.
Meanwhile, CM Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the matter and expressed grief over the tragic death of the devotees. In an official statement, the CM’s Office said, “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in an unfortunate accident at the Shri Awshaneshwar Mahadev Temple premises in Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased.”
It further added, “Maharaj Ji has directed district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations. Maharaj Ji has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the Supreme Deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured.”

According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when both victims sought refuge under a tin shed to escape the rain. Preliminary reports suggest that the structure might have become electrified due to faulty wiring or leakage. A probe is underway into the matter.
