As Delhi grapples with hazardous air quality following Diwali, certain cities across India continue to enjoy cleaner air. Northeastern cities like Gangtok in Sikkim and Aizawl in Mizoram boast excellent air quality, supporting respiratory health, while Mangalore in Karnataka also ranks among the cities with the least pollution.
Delhi’s AQI Hits Hazardous Levels
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has stayed consistently above 300 since Diwali, reaching around 350 recently, classifying it as ‘very poor.’ The deteriorating air quality poses significant health risks to residents. Recently, the Supreme Court criticized the Delhi government over its blanket ban on firecrackers, observing that enforcement was weak. The Court directed the Delhi government and Police Commissioner to submit affidavits detailing the steps taken this year to enforce the ban and the proposed measures for next year.
Northeast Cities Set Example with Excellent Air Quality
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Gangtok recorded an AQI of just 29 on November 6, making it the least polluted city in India. Unlike Delhi’s smoke-filled air, Gangtok’s primary pollutant is ozone, maintaining its clean air profile. Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, reported an AQI of 34, primarily impacted by PM10, yet its pollution levels are still significantly lower than those in Delhi.

Southern Cities Excel in Air Quality
Several southern cities, including Mangalore (AQI 32), have maintained ‘good’ air quality status. While Bengaluru recorded a ‘moderate’ AQI of 110, affected by PM10 and PM2.5 largely from vehicle emissions, other cities like Udupi (AQI 45), Tirunelveli (35), and Thrissur (46) achieved commendable air quality.
Regional Factors and Local Pollution Control
The clean air quality in northeastern and southern cities is not solely due to favorable geography but also effective management of pollution sources, which sharply contrasts with the challenges faced by cities in northern India.
